講題:Mapping Japanese Contributions to South East Asian Studies: Motivations, Methods, and Intellectual
摘要:
Japanese scholars have a long-standing tradition of conducting research in Southeast Asia, yet the intellectual contributions arising from these endeavours and how researchers reflect on them remain underexplored. This presentation traces the development of Japanese scholarly knowledge within Southeast Asian studies, and outlines key conditions that shape research methodologies in this field. Focusing on the engagement and contributions of Japanese scholars across diverse disciplines, we combine both quantitative and qualitative approaches, including ethnographic research, to analyse the motivations and intellectual experiences that drive scholarship. We identify central themes and distinctive features of multidisciplinary area studies in Japan, highlighting Japan’s unique contributions to global Southeast Asian studies. Finally, this research underscores the potential for knowledge exchange and collaborative networks within the Asia- Pacific region, emphasizing Japan’s role in knowledge production.
