演講摘要:

People, goods, and ideas move and travel across boundaries. Studies on borderlands

have focused on human lives, societies, identities, and the challenges posed by modern nation-states and global market dynamics. What happens to wild animals that live along the borderlands? What is the relationship between wildlife and borders? Animals have pathways that do not recognize the political borders imposed by humans. This talk focuses on Asian elephants living along the borderlands and their shared history with humans in the Yunnan-Bengal-Myanmar landscape. Using more-than-human framework in relation to borderlands, I will discuss (1) the importance of elephants in shaping the history of the landscape by highlighting their role in the local social lives (2) Elephants’ past routes in the region and how their movements suffer from various levels of interruptions because of habitat degradation that affects the lives of both humans and elephants (3) how the fragmented habitats of elephants are

protected through new conservation paradigms - the “elephant corridors.” Keeping elephants at the centre, this talk will explore the dynamics of borderlands where these pachyderms challenge the meaning and functioning of territories including the human national borders.
